Description:

Emilio Bacardi 3x Signed Docs As Mayor of Santiago de Cuba Following the Span-Am War

Two Spanish language documents signed a total of three times by Emilio Bacardi (1844-1922), the eldest son of Bacardi & Company founder Facundo Bacardi (1814-1886), as well as the Mayor of Santiago de Cuba, Cuba from 1898-1906. The documents dated January 17, 1899 and April 5, 1899 respectively relate to Bacardi's mayoral responsibilities under the new American military governorship. Expected wear including toning, scattered ghost ink impressions and discoloration, and minor chipped edges, else very good. Accompanied by two embossed Letters of Authenticity from Todd Mueller Autographs (Colorado Springs, Colorado), both dated April 5, 2022.

Emilio Bacardi had assumed the presidency of the Bacardi & Company after his father Facundo retired in 1877. Emilio oversaw his father's ever-expanding rum distillery and distribution business throughout the 1880s and 1890s, before being imprisoned and exiled from Cuba for his political beliefs. Emilio returned to Cuba in August 1898, towards the end of the Spanish-American War. Preliminary peace negotiations took place that fall and the Spanish officially left Cuba on January 1, 1899.

Leonard Wood (1860-1927), the new U.S. military governor of Santiago de Cuba, appointed Emilio Bacardi as Mayor of Santiago de Cuba on November 25, 1898. With this gesture, Wood not only recognized Bacardi's leadership qualities, but also conformed to the Cubans' requests for a degree of self-government. Bacardi was reelected as Mayor of Santiago de Cuba and served in this role until 1906, when he joined the National Senate.

The lot consists of:

1. A 1p manuscript document, no. 407, issued from Santiago de Cuba on January 17, 1899, requesting permission to photograph a particular building on San Geronimo Street. Bacardi granted the license, and signed the document as "Emilio Bacardi" near center bottom. Bearing an "Alcaldia Municipal de Santiago de Cuba" [trans: "Municipal Mayor of Santiago de Cuba"] hand-stamp at lower right. 8.375" x 12.375."

2. A 2pp double-sided document, no. 708, issued from Santiago de Cuba on April 5, 1899, regarding the registry of a horse purchased by one Manuel Gonzalez. Bacardi has signed the partly printed and partly manuscript document twice, once at the center recto, and once near the top verso, both times as "Emilio Bacardi." An additional hand-stamp reading "Alcaldia Municipal de Santiago de Cuba" is found on the first page. 6.25" x 9.75."
