Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), the Transcendentalist philosopher-writer of "Walden" (1854), died of tuberculosis at age 44 of on May 6, 1862. His friend and fellow writer Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) composed a eulogy which he delivered at Thoreau's funeral at the Concord First Parish Meetinghouse on May 9, 1862. It would be published for the first time as "Thoreau" three months later in the August 1862 issue of "The Atlantic Monthly."

In it, Emerson outlines many of the basic biographical details of Thoreau's life, such as his education and professional pursuits. Yet he also delves into some of his friend's lovable idiosyncrasies, such as Thoreau's unnaturally precise ability to mentally estimate distances and weights, or his enthusiasm in leading hunts for chestnuts, grapes, or huckleberries. In the concluding paragraph, Emerson writes: "The country knows not yet, or in the least part, how great a son it has lost. It seems an injury that he should leave in the midst his broken task… but he, at least is content. His soul was made for the noblest society; he had in a short life exhausted the capabilities of the world; wherever there is knowledge, wherever there is virtue, wherever there is beauty, he will find a home."
