Description:

Else Holmelund Minarik Archive: Letter, Danish Book Edition, and Poems

A collection relating to American author Else Holmelund Minarik, including an autograph letter signed, a Dutch copy of one of her children's stories, and a group of photocopied poems with handwritten notations. Includes the following:

1. Autograph Letter Signed "Else". 3pp, measuring 8.5" x 11", No place, dated October 29, 1974. Addressed to "Lorenzo", regarding a Halloween book and her life in retirement. With a sketch on the first page within the text. In part: "Homer and I are very good at retirement. We garden tremendously - take the dogs for walks - see lots of good television. But party days are over. I give one a year. And driving anywhere at night is something I now hate. There are some wild drivers in this state. We were in an accident that sent me into the windshield. Homer was strapped in, but I was holding a puppy, and not strapped in. the puppy is fine - grown big and stupid now. But even worse - our good friend Albion Hodgdon - a famous botanist - has been all but killed by a drunken driver. He has been in the hospital for months - with brain damage. So - all that explains how we live quietly at home, associating with Swiss chard and tomato plants…" With flattened mail folds and a bold signature.

2. "Lille Bjørn" by Else H. Minarik. Copenhagen: Thorkild Becks Forlag, 1958. Octavo, 61pp. The Dutch edition of Minarik's "Little Bear" story, signed on the half title page in Dutch, "Min gode ven Jan med Kærlige hilsner. Fra Else", which translates to "My good friend Jan - with kind regards. From Else." Light wear to the edges and corners. Very good.

3. Poetry photocopies with handwritten notations. Multiple copies of "Love for a small boat" (March 29, 2004) and "Lobster Goes Dancing". One copy of "Love for a small boat" includes a handwritten notation done by Minarik, which reads "Dear Jenny - here's another fish story. I'm thinking of getting my own copyright in it. Perhaps starting a small publishing house. Lily the Cat keeps trying to sit on this - for luck I guess. Love - Else." Very fine, with minor wear.

Else Holmelund Minarik (1920-2012) was born in Denmark but immigrated to the U.S. with her family at the age of four. She graduated from Queens College, City University of New York and became a journalist for the "Daily Sentinel" during the Second World War. Following the war, Minarik became a school teacher before breaking into children's literature. She is best remembered for her "Little Bear" series, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, which followed the daily lives and adventures of Little Bear and Mother Bear. Her last book of the series, "Little Bear and the Marco Polo" was published in 2010.
