3. Two full color mock ups of the original cover design for the novel, the first on photopaper, 10" x 8", the second on standard paper 8.5" x 11".

4. A signed 3pp typed presentation letter on yellow paper stock to "Irwin T. Holtzman and the Friends of the Detroit Public Library", dated "3 August 85", and signed by Leonard in full as "Elmore Leonard", discussing his donation of "galleys of an omnibus edition of three of his works … " to their rare book auction. He continues by mentioning several film projects which were "written on request in 1974 for Michael Caine and Sean Connery … ", finally lamenting: "I wonder if anyone simply sits down and writes a book".

5. A typed 1pp letter, dated "Jan. 18, 1987" on Elmore Leonard letterhead, presenting Bandits manuscript to the recipient, signed by Leonard Elmore as "Elmore".

The entire set is neatly housed in an elegant, deep clamshell case, handcrafted in quarter leather with raised bands, gilt ruling, and gilt titles. An extremely unique one-of-a-kind archive by a leading contemporary American author, including the full signed typescript of Bandits which was later adapted into a 2001 film starring Bruce Willis (born 1955) and Billy Bob Thornton (born 1955). Offered with numerous pieces in fine condition, each signed and/or annotated by Leonard Elmore.

Commended by critics for his gritty realism and strong dialogue, Elmore sometimes took liberties with grammar in the interest of speeding the story along. In his essay "Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing" he said: "My most important rule is one that sums up the 10: If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it." He also hinted: "I try to leave out the parts that readers tend to skip."

In addition to Bandits, a number of Elmore’s novels have been adapted as films, including Get Shorty, Out of Sight, Rum Punch, 52 Pick-up, The Ambassador, Joe Kidd, Hombre, Three-Ten to Yuma, and The Big Bounce.
