Eleanor Roosevelt TLS "If a Women Suspects Fraud In The Registration, What Can She Do About It... To Insure an Honest Election"

1p, [7.875” x 10.875"], Single Page TLS Democratic State Committee, Women's Division, 15 East 40th Street, New York City. Dated April 30, 1925. Signed “Eleanor Roosevelt”, and addressed to John Godfrey Saxe, a Manhattan attorney and member of the New York State Senate. Expected folds from mailing. Dark, bold signature.

Roosevelt sends a request for the New York state senator to write an article on what women should do if they suspect fraud in the upcoming election. In full:

"Dear Mr. Saxe:

I would be extremely grateful if you could write me an article of about 1500 words on the lines of inspection and watching at the polls, both on election day and on primary day. For instance, if a women suspects fraud in the registration, what can she do about it, what can she do and what should she watch for on election day, in a small village let us say, which is largely Republican, to insure an honest election and an honest count of the ballots.

You will know better than I can tell you what should go into this article. It is to be used to educate the women workers in the party up-state who are as yet extremely timid and have very little knowledge of what kind of work they can do and what rights they have. If you wish to treat one subject at a time and give me two or three short articles to put into different numbers, I will be glad to do that. We have no issue in July and August, so I would like them to go into the June, September and October numbers.

With many thanks for your kindness, I am

Very sincerely yours,

Eleanor Roosevelt"

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) From 1922-1935, Roosevelt was the Vice President, Finance Chair, and Women’s Democratic News newsletter editor and columnist for the Women's Division of the New York State Democratic Committee. She joined the group with the goal of garnering Democratic candidates, votes and support of more women. Roosevelt helped create and sustain an outreach of the organization to rural counties.

Over time, the organization became an extremely powerful venue in New York state politics. In 1924, Roosevelt campaigned through New York State for Democrat Alfred Smith against her first cousin, Republican Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. in his gubernatorial election. Smith won the election and became an ally of Eleanor Roosevelt. During the 1928 Democratic National Convention, she headed all the women’s activities for Smith’s efforts leading up to and following his nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate. Roosevelt had earned the trust of Smith and was able to help him gain access to and convince FDR to run as his successor as Governor of New York.
