Description:

Elbridge Gerry Appoints Justice of the Peace as Governor of Massachusetts

Partial-printed DS, measuring 9.25" x 15", dated February 3, 1812, Boston, MA. A document from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts appointing "Samuel Buffington Esquire, to be one of our Justices of the Peace, within and for the County of Hampshire for and during the term of seven years… In testimony whereof… His Excellency Elbridge Gerry our Governor…". Boldly penned "E Gerry" on the upper left side under seal and countersigned by Secretary of the Commonwealth Benjamin Homans. Expected wear including darkened surface toning, creasing and folding throughout. Overall, in excellent condition.

Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814) was an American politician and active opposer of British control in the colonies, becoming a signatory of the Declaration of Independence for the state of Massachusetts. Later in his career, he would serve as the state's 9th governor, causing controversy after creating new, highly partisan, senate districts. This event led to the coining of the term "gerrymandering", referring to the salamander-like shape of the districts in Essex County. Despite this, Gerry was nominated as the vice presidential candidate under James Madison, a position he served until his death in 1814.
