Eisenhower TLS Just Post WW II. Ex. Forbes

Single page typed letter signed on personal letterhead, "DDE", 7" x 10.25'. Dated "October 12, 1946", and signed by Dwight Eisenhower "Dwight Eisenhower". Letter written to Mr. John Gray of Culzean Castle. Near fine, with original mailing envelope. Several small smudges, with large erased section on mailing envelope. Near fine.

Ex. The Forbes Collection. Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), American owner-publisher of Forbes magazine, and consummate collector,  amassed one of the most substantial and broad collections of such breadth and depth that it filled a half-dozen residences, and sat on three continents. Many of his manuscripts were sold in multi-million dollar sales by Christie's in the early 2000s. The Forbes name is considered to be the apex of provenance when attached to an item like the above. We are honored to have been chosen by the family to sell at auction the substantial balance of the collection.

Eisenhower writes:

"…I know full well how much you personally did to insure my comfort and enjoyment during my recent stay at Culzean Castle …"

Acknowledged as Robert Adam’s greatest Scottish masterpiece, the castle he designed dates from 1792 and took 15 years to build. Adam created the Castle for David, 10th Earl of Cassillis, on a site associated with the Kennedy family since the 14th century.

Rising majestically from its clifftop location, looking over to the Isle of Arran, Culzean is set amidst 600 acres of beautiful Scottish countryside, with an enchanting terraced garden, charming follies, relaxing woodland walks and inviting sandy beaches.

In 1945 the Marquess of Ailsa gave Culzean Castle and its surrounding gardens and woodland to the National Trust for Scotland. He asked that part of the Castle be offered to General Eisenhower, as a thank you from the Scottish people for commanding the Allied Forces in the battle for Europe. The rooms available today are the same rooms used by Eisenhower and his guests during their visits. The General visited Culzean on 4 occasions, including while President.

General Eisenhower is quoted as saying of Culzean ‘This is a place I can relax’.
