Description:

Eisenhower Strengthens NATO Poignant in Terms of Current Russia/Ukraine Conflict "Collective security ... preserving from...threat the freedoms that are the foundations of our way of life"

1p, 7" x 10.25", September 6, 1951 on DDE stationary. TLS written to Mr. Charles R. Clason, the former Republican member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. Eisenhower writes as NATO's first Supreme Allied Commander, Europe where he spent nearly two years strengthening the Western European alliance. An incredibly important letter Boldly signed by the future President as "Dwight D. Eisenhower." Flattened folds from mailing, else fine.

In part:

"It is interesting to note that you are re-entering public affairs. The situation in the world today requires the active interest and thorough understanding of every American. This is particularly true if we are to accomplish with success the job of preserving from every external and internal threat the freedoms that are the foundations of our way of life.

To help in the development of collective security through the cooperation of Western Nations is the job to which I am currently assigned. My conclusions as to its vital importance appear to be in conformity with the decisions of our Congress. Success in it obviously requires the support of all Americans. Consequently I would deem it highly improper for me to do or say anything which might tend to encourage partisan thinking or consideration toward this project. In line with this belief, I have consistently refrained from making any comment on the American political scene. So long as I am in my present position I must continue to do so. I am sure that you will appreciate the validity of these reasons, which make my decision appear to be the only one possible.

With warm personal regard to Mrs. Clason and yourself,

Most sincerely,

Dwight D. Eisenhower"

In April 1949, 12 nations from Europe and North America founded the NorthAtlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), as a mutual defense pact to protect themselves against possible military aggression by the Soviet Union. In January 1951, Eisenhower assumed the position of NATO's first Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR) and spent nearly two years strengthening the Western European alliance.

The appointment of Eisenhower as the first SACEUR was crucial to the success of NATO. In just 17 months, Eisenhower would change public opinion concerning NATO in both Europe and North America. By May 1952, when he resigned from the post of SACEUR in order to seek the Republican nomination for the United States presidency, Eisenhower could be justifiably proud of his accomplishments-NATO had become a legitimate military force, whose goals both Europeans and North Americans supported staunchly.

Charles Russell Clason was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Massachusetts and an attorney. Clason was born in Gardiner, Maine. He attended Bates College and received his law degree from Georgetown University. Clason went on to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
