Eisenhower's High School Geometry Book, Signed x2 with Doodles and Notes
Signed Book

A high school geometry text book owned and signed twice by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. "Elements of Geometry" by Andrew W. Phillips and Irving Fisher. New York: American Book Co., 1896. Octavo, viii, 3-540pp including an Appendix, Exercises, and an Index, plus 12pp of ads. Signed twice, "Dwight D. Eisenhower" and "Eisenhower" on the front pastedown and endpaper. Publisher's quarter morocco green cloth with a title label at the spine. Rubbing and wear to the book edges and slightly bumped corners. Marked loss to the gilt label on the spine. Moderate scattered soiling and dampstaining to internal pages. Paper loss to half of the rear free endpaper. Boldly signed.

With numerous markings, brief notes, diagrams, and doodles throughout, most in pencil. Many of the drawings and notes are diagrams or page ranges relating to assignments, but the first table of contents page features a small portrait of a man's face in profile. There is also a small poem written at the back, reading: "Whether in blue or K-det gray- we'll back that old team till dying day [Army blue and cadet gray are colors worn by commissioned officers or students of West Point]."

Dwight Eisenhower attended Abilene High School and graduated in 1909, making it likely that these signatures and inscriptions were made around 1906-1909. He was a good student and enjoyed math, writing in his biography "In Review: Pictures I've Kept": "The introduction of plane geometry was an intellectual adventure, one that entranced me. After a few months, my teachers conducted an unusual experiment. The principal and my mathematics teacher called me to the office and told me that they were going to take away my textbook. Thereafter, I was to work out the geometric problems without the benefit of a book. They said that for the remaining months, unless the experiment was terminated by them, I would automatically receive an A-plus grade. Strangely enough, I got along fairly well..."
