Eisenhower's book recounts his command experiences during World War II throughout the conflict, from the North African, Italian, Sicilian, and French campaigns, to the final onslaught against the Nazis in Germany. In addition to serving as an invaluable firsthand account, Eisenhower's "Crusade in Europe" is copiously illustrated with maps, photographs, and souvenir typescripts of important documents; there are 6 color maps including the full-spread maps on the pastedown endpapers, 38 text maps, and 16 illustrations. The book also includes several indices, a glossary of military code names, and an index. The depth and breadth of Eisenhower's account make it an authoritative historical source akin to Winston Churchill's 6-volume memoir, "The Second World War".

Perle Mesta (1889-1975) was an American socialite, well-known for her lavish Washington, D.C. parties. She married Pennsylvania steel manufacturer George Mesta in 1916 but was widowed nine years later and became the sole inheritor of his $78 million estate. She was active in the National Woman's Party and became an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1940, Mesta switched to the Democratic Party and became an early supporter of Harry S. Truman. In return, Truman rewarded her with an ambassadorship to Luxembourg.
