Eisenhower Lovely Father's Day Letter to Barry T. Leithead, One of the Men Who Put it on the Calendar

1p TLS signed by 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) as "Dwight D Eisenhower" near bottom. Written at the White House, Washington, D.C. on May 20, 1958. Cream watermarked paper with letterhead gilt-embossed "DDE" and "The White House" at top. Near fine. Measures 7.125" x 10.375".

Eisenhower's friend Barry T. Leithead was also President of the National Father's Day Council. This organization, established in 1931 to make Father's Day a nationally recognized and universally celebrated holiday, formed an executive committee in 1941 to select "Father of the Year" honorees from amongst civic leaders.

"I was of course delighted to learn from you, as President of the National Father's Day Council, of the award to be given to my brother Milton as the 'Father of the Year'…

It is difficult to picture one's youngest brother as the 'Father of the Year,' even though he has, for many years, been one of my most respected and trusted counsellors and associates. In addition to the esteem in which I hold him, I have long admired -- with far more than the typical pride of a fond uncle -- the character and ability of his children, my nephew Milton, Jr., and my niece Ruth. In my opinion his devotion to his own children, together with his contribution to all the splendid college students he has helped develop over the years, more than put Milton in the class of outstanding fathers."

Milton Stover Eisenhower (1899-1985) was President Eisenhower's youngest brother (born after Arthur, Edgar, Dwight, Roy, Paul, and Earl). Milton committed his life to education, and was by all accounts a popular administrator and capable fundraiser. He served as the President of his alma mater Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS) between 1943-1950); President of Pennsylvania State University (State College, PA) between 1950-1956; and President of Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) between 1956-1967 and between 1971-1972.

President Eisenhower proudly mentions Milton Stover Eisenhower, Jr. (1930-2002) and Ruth Eakin Eisenhower Snider (1938-1984), two of his ten nephews and nieces.

President Eisenhower's correspondent, Barry T. Leithead (1907-1974), was the chairman and C.E.O. of Cluett, Peabody and Co., an apparel manufacturer. Leithead had worked his way up the ranks from Chicago floor salesman in 1929 to New York corporate chairman in 1966. A zealous Republican, Leithead fundraised for Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956, in the latter year generating $1,000,000 as chairman of the New York State rally. Leithead was also a personal friend and an occasional golfing partner.
