Description:

Eisenhower Dwight

Eisenhower Family Signed Photo, 3 Months after V-E Day

Three members of the Eisenhower-Doud family signed this black and white photograph taken in July 1945. From left to right, future 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) as "Dwight D. Eisenhower"; John Sheldon Doud (1870-1951), Dwight's father-in-law, as "John S Doud"; and John S.D. Eisenhower (1922-2013), Dwight's son, as "John SD Eisenhower". The photograph was inscribed in an unknown hand verso: "Taken at Pentagon B'ld'g July - Washington DC. 1945." Near fine. 6.875" x 4.75". Comes with its original transmittal envelope sent by Dwight's mother-in-law Elivera to future First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. Postmarked from Pueblo, Colorado on January 12, 1946, and bearing three cancelled 8 cent air mail stamps.

The photograph shows three generations of a future presidential family.

In the summer of 1945, Dwight D. Eisenhower was flush from his recent triumph marshalling Allied forces in Europe. The career soldier and five-star general would become increasingly involved in national politics and international affairs, most notably in 1950 when he served as the supreme commander of NATO. He would become the 34th U.S. President in January 1953.

John S. Doud, Dwight's father-in-law, was a retired meatpacking executive and stockyard investor.

John S.D. Eisenhower was Dwight and Mamie's second and only surviving son. Shown here in military uniform, the younger Eisenhower had graduated from West Point just a year earlier on June 6, 1944, a ceremony his father couldn't attend because of D-Day. John S.D. Eisenhower went on to serve in World War II and Korea, eventually attaining the rank of brigadier general. He also served in the Eisenhower, Nixon, and Ford administrations.
