Edwin Markham (1852-1940) was an American poet who held the honor of being the Poet Laureate of Oregon from 1923 to 1931. After his marriage in 1898, Markham moved to Staten Island. "Lincoln, The Man of the People" was originally written in 1900 for the Republican Club of New York City in honor of Lincoln’s birthday. In 1922, the poem was selected from 250 entries to be presented at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. Markham attended the event and read the poem before the attendees. Dr. Henry Van Dyke of Princeton said of the poem, "Edwin Markham's Lincoln is the greatest poem ever written on the immortal martyr, and the greatest that ever will be written."

We’ve done our best, but there could be secretarial or facsimile signatures found within this sizable collection.
