Description:

Edwin M. Stanton Signed War Department Card, Dated Just Days Before Andrew Johnson's Impeachment Trial Began

A card signed by then U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton (1814-1869) as "Edwin M Stanton / Secretary of War" at lower right. The cream stock card is pre-printed "War Department, / Washington, D.C. / 18--" at top, and it was secretarially inscribed with the date "March 23, 1868" and the name of its intended recipient "Mr. Chas. L. Iverson." Mounting traces verso, else near fine. 4.125" x 2.5."

The Stanton signed card is dated March 23, 1868, just one week before the prosecution presented their case in the sensational impeachment trial of 17th U.S. President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875). Johnson's dismissal of Stanton as Secretary of War by presidential mandate on February 21, 1868 precipitated the impeachment proceedings, since it violated the Tenure of Office Act. (Stanton had disapproved of Johnson's leniency towards former Confederate states following the end of the Civil War, and Johnson wanted to replace him with another secretary.) Articles 1-9 of Johnson's impeachment addressed specific acts of wrongdoing against Stanton. The impeachment trial was opened on March 5th. After prosecutors presented their case from March 30th - April 9th, Johnson's defense attorneys responded between April 15th - 20th. Johnson was acquitted in two separate votes on May 16th and May 26th. Stanton resigned from the secretaryship two days later.

Edwin M. Stanton served as U.S. Secretary of War from 1862-1868 during the Lincoln and Johnson administrations.
