King Edward I of England
n.p., attributed to 13th C.
Edward I-Era Miniature Illuminated Manuscript, Plus 2 Bonus Black Prince Engravings!
Illuminated Manuscript
A fragment of an illuminated manuscript attributed to the 13th C., thus dating from the era of King Edward I of England (1239-1307). The fragment is affixed to a sheet of laid watermarked paper, below which a later antiquarian has inscribed: "MS: temps: Edw: primus," or roughly, "Manuscript dating from the time of Edward the First." The paper mount is threaded along the gutter. With expected toning, uneven discoloration, isolated edge darkening, and scattered binding holes to the mount. The illuminated manuscript fragment measures a diminutive 2.25" x 1.875." The overall mount, unfolded and laid flat, measures 9.375" x 7.75."

The Latin manuscript features seventeen lines of minuscule script on vellum. Several capital letters and words are illuminated in red. Both the handwriting and clerical shorthand are consistent with those used by medieval scholars, secretaries, or other learned persons of the period, though the manuscript has not been translated.

The interesting "Pro Patria" watermark of the paper mount indicates that it was probably produced in an 18th or 19th C. Dutch or European paper mill. The watermark depicts the "Maid of Dort," an allegorical figure associated with the cause of Dutch independence from Spain. The helmeted Maid bears a staff and stands in an enclosure next to an armed lion rampant.

Two exquisite early engravings after royal seals can be found on the page facing the illuminated manuscript. Similar imagery and legends have been associated with Edward I's great grandson, Edward of Woodstock, better known as the Black Prince (1330-1376). The top seal depicts an enthroned figure bearing a scepter, while the bottom seal depicts a medieval knight astride a destrier. The Latin inscriptions encircling both seals read: "S: EDWARDI: PRIMOGENITI: REGIS: ANGL: PRINCIPIS: AQUITAINE: ET: WALLIE: DUCIS: CORNUBIE: ET: COMITIS: CESTRIE" which translates to "Edward the First-Born King of England, Prince of Aquitaine and Wales, Duke of Cornwall, and Earl of Chester."
