Edward Everett (1794-1865) was an American politician, Unitarian pastor, educator, diplomat, and orator from Massachusetts. A member of the Whig party, he served a number of positions including U.S. Representative, Senator, and Governor. In 1849, he became an assistant to longtime friend and colleague Daniel Webster, who had just been appointed Secretary of State. Upon Webster's death in 1852, Everett succeeded him in the position for just four months until he was sworn in as a Senator from Massachusetts.
