Edmund Jennings Randolph (1753-1813) was a Founding Father of the United States, attorney, and the 7th Governor of Virginia. As a delegate from Virginia, he attended the Constitutional Convention and helped to create the national constitution while serving on its Committee of Detail. He was appointed the first United States Attorney General by George Washington and subsequently served as the second Secretary of State during the Washington administration.

Burgess Ball (1749-1800) was a lieutenant colonel during the American Revolution and served with several regiments in Virginia. He was aide-de-camp to George Washington and was with him at Valley Forge. Ball was married to Frances Washington (1763-1815), who was the daughter of George Washington's brother, Charles Washington (1738-1799). This made Ball George Washington's nephew-in-law, and the two corresponded regarding their children, property, and various business matters.

George Washington's career as a professional surveyor began in 1749. Between the ages of 17 and 20, he had completed nearly 200 surveys totaling more than 60,000 acres. Although Washington did not survey professionally after 1752, he continued to utilize his surveying skills, often for the purpose of acquiring new land for himself, defending his property boundaries, or dividing his holdings into profitable farms.
