Randolph Edmund 1753 - 1813 Edmund Randolph, successor to Patrick Henry as Governor of Virginia, appoints six Justices of the Peace including Richard Bland Lee - two years later, Randolph became the first U.S. Attorney General and then succeeded Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State


Partly Printed Document Signed "Edm: Randolph" as Governor of Virginia, 1p, 7" x 11". Completed in manuscript. Richmond, Virginia, November 15, 1787. Blind embossed seal affixed with red wax at lower left. On verso, expertly infilled holes at cross folds and strengthened. On watermarked laid paper. Very Good condition.

In part, "Know Ye, That our Governor on recommendation from the Court of the County of Loudoun hath, with advice of our Council of State, constituted and appointed Patrick Cavan, John Littlejohn, Richard Bland Lee, Hugh Douglass, Benjamin Grayson & Thomas Noland, Gentlemen, Justices of the Piece in and for the said County..."

Richard Bland Lee was the younger brother of both Washington and Adams' Attorney General Charles Lee and Gen. Henry "Light-Horse" Harry Lee (father of Gen. Robert E. Lee) and served in the 1st U.S. Congress. Patrick Cavan was a tavern owner and builder. John Littlejohn was a Methodist Minister. Hugh Douglass was a Captain in the Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Grayson was a baker. Thomas Noland operated a ferry across the Potomac.
