Edith Wilson Re: Franking Privilege

 

Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States (1913-1921) died on February 3, 1924. “An Act Granting a franking privilege to Edith Bolling Wilson” was approved on March 4, 1924: “Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That all mail matter sent by the post by Edith Bolling Wilson, widow of the late Woodrow Wilson, under her written autograph signature, be conveyed free of postage during her natural life.” 

 

(1) Black-bordered Typed Letter Signed “Edith Bolling Wilson,” 1 page, 5” x 8”. 2340 S Street N.W. [Washington, D.C., March 7, 1924. To the Postmaster General [Harry S. New. In full, “Accept my thanks for your very kind letter of March fifth informing me that Congress has enacted a law granting me free transmission in the mails of matter sent by me under my written autograph signature. I am obliged for your courtesy in outlining the territory which the privilege covers.” Fine condition. 

 

(2) Black-bordered Typed Letter Signed “Edith Bolling Wilson,” 1 page, 5” x 8”. 2340 S Street N.W. [Washington, D.C., March 19, 1924. To the Postmaster General [Harry S. New. In full, “Admiral Grayson delivered to me on yesterday your very kind message to the effect that it would be acceptable to the Post Office Department for me to use a fac-simile signature, made with rubber stamp, for franking letters. As I was under the impression that there had been a ruling to the contrary, I have thought it best to write you before doing this. I shall be grateful if you will advise me regarding the matter.” Accompanied by matching black-bordered envelope, 5.25” x 4.25”, addressed to The Postmaster General, bearing her ink free frank “Edith Bolling Wilson” in the upper right, postmarked Washington, D.C., March 19, 1924. Each in fine condition. 

 

(3) Envelope bearing her stamped free frank “Edith Bolling Wilson” across the top of a 3.25” x 2.25” envelope, addressed in another hand to Miss Howland and Miss Brownell, the Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, Penna, bearing partial machine and hand postmarks, October 7, 1928, enclosing her 3” x 2.25” calling card engraved “Mrs. Woodrow Wilson / 2340 S. Street.” Fine condition.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
