Description:

Edgar Mitchell & Charlie Duke SPs, 4-Pc Space Archive!

A small but exquisite collection of Space memorabilia commemorating the Apollo 14 and Apollo 16 space missions, including three glossy color photos signed by American astronauts Edgar Mitchell (1930-2016) and Charlie M. Duke, Jr. (born 1935); in addition to an embroidered Apollo 14 mission patch. Expected light wear, else near fine. The photos measure 8" x 10."

The lot includes:

1. A photograph showing the shadow of an American flag cast on the lunar surface, signed, inscribed, and dated by Edgar Mitchell as "'What a lift off!!' / Fra Mauro Base / 141:45:44 2-6-71 / Edgar Mitchell / Apollo 14 LMP" at lower right. Printed on Kodak photo paper. Near fine.

2. A photograph depicting the Antares lander, signed, inscribed, and dated by Edgar Mitchell in gold metallic felt tip pen as "'Antares in the bright / morning Sun - / Fra Mauro, 2-5-71 / Edgar Mitchell / Apollo 14, LMP" at upper left. Printed on Kodak photo paper. A few minor wrinkles, else near fine.

3. An oval embroidered Apollo 14 mission patch, some loose threads, else near fine. 4" x 3.5."

Edgar Mitchell had served as Lunar Module Pilot during the Apollo 14 space mission (January 31-February 9, 1971), alongside Commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr. and Command Module Pilot Stuart A. Roosa. The Apollo 14 mission marked several notable firsts: the first successful foray into the lunar highlands, and the longest distance thus traveled by foot on the lunar surface. Nearly 100 lbs. of geological samples were collected during the mission.

4. A photograph showing Charlie Duke saluting the American flag to the right of the Lunar Module, signed by him as "Charles Duke" at center right. Printed on Kodak photo paper. A slightly blunted lower left corner, else near fine.

Charlie Duke as Lunar Module Pilot joined Commander John W. Young and Command Module Pilot Thomas K. Mattingly II as the 3-person crew of the Apollo 16 mission, (April 16-27, 1972), the tenth crewed NASA mission and fifth moon landing. The crew landed in the Descartes Highlands where they collected over 200 lbs. of moon rocks including "Big Muley," a record-breaking 26 lbs. specimen.
