Eddie Rickenbacker Signed Photo Dedicated to NYC Art Dealer
SP

A color photographic print of celebrated World War I fighter pilot Edward "Eddie" V. Rickenbacker (1900-1973), signed, inscribed, and dedicated by Rickenbacker outside the image on the bottom of the photograph mat as: "With Kindest regards / To 'Erwin S. Barrie' / Eddie Rickenbacker." N.d., n.p. The photographic print reproduces a portrait by Howard Chandler Christy originally executed in ca. March 1943; the artist's printed signature and date are visible at lower right. Light toning, scattered wrinkles, and slightly bumped and wrinkled mat corners. The textured color print surface of Rickenbacker's portrait is near fine. Not examined out of the mat. The print measures approximately 7.375" x 9.375" while the overall mat size is 10.375" x 13.5" x .25."

Rickenbacker dedicated this signed photographic print to Erwin S. Barrie (1886-1983), an artist, art dealer, and longtime gallery manager of the Grand Central Art Galleries in midtown Manhattan. The Christy portrait of Rickenbacker shown here was painted in March 1943, and was loosely based on a previous portrait of the flyer shown seated in a similar position but wearing a World War I aviator's uniform instead of a suit and tie. The World War I-era Christy portrait of Rickenbacker was exhibited at Barrie's Grand Central Art Galleries in late 1942, around the time that Rickenbacker and several crew mates survived a World War II mission-related plane crash in the Pacific Ocean.

One of the most famous World War I aviators, Rickenbacker logged in over 300 recorded combat hours in France and Flanders during World War I, destroying 26 verified enemy aircraft ranging from fighter planes to observation balloons. His record was unbroken until World War II.
