Description:

Ed White Signed Project Gemini 1st Day Cover with Space Walk Photograph

Measuring 6.5" x 3.5", Cape Canaveral, Florida, dated June 3, 1965. Project Gemini first day cover signed by astronauts "Edward H White II" and "Jim McDivitt." With two five-cent stamps, one of the White House with an American flag, and the other a special Project Gemini edition stamp. Accompanied by an 8" x 10" glossy color photograph of Ed White during the first American spacewalk. He can be seen tethered to the spacecraft by a long strap and umbilical line (gold). The gold-plated visor is what protected him from the unfiltered rays of the sun. In his right hand is a handheld self-maneuvering device. Faint spotting to the front of the cover, with minor adhesive staining and soiling on verso. Boldly signed by both men. The photo is very fine.

Edward Higgins White II (1930-1967) was a U.S. Air Force officer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. He was selected for the Gemini program and became the first American to walk in space on June 3, 1965. White had enjoyed the experience so much that he had to be ordered back into the spacecraft, stating "it's the saddest moment of my life." He was next selected for the Apollo 1 program and tragically lost his life along with his fellow astronauts in an accidental fire that broke out during pre-launch testing.
