Eclectic Mix, Autograph Balance Dealers' Lot, 14 Pieces!

 

A diverse dealers' lot of 25+ autographs, including signed letters, documents, photos, postal covers, magazine covers, and event programs. The miscellaneous signatories can be divided into three categories: American statesmen; international leaders; and American sports celebrities. A select list of signatories, in alphabetical order, includes: Spiro Agnew, William Jennings Bryan, Alexander J. Dallas, Rajiv Gandhi, Paul von Hindenburg, John Kerry, Henry A. Kissinger, Joseph Lieberman, John McCain, Jack Nicklaus, Yitzak Rabin, Syngman Rhee, Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and Johnny Weissmuller. In an odd twist, the lot includes the signatures of three assassinated leaders.

 

The lot consists of:

 

American Statesmen

 

1. The program from the October 26, 1999 "Don Imus Roast benefiting the Spina Bifida Association of America" signed by American politicians John McCain (1936-2018), then U.S. Senator from Arizona; John Kerry (born 1943), future U.S. Secretary of State; Joseph Lieberman (born 1942), then U.S. Senator from Connecticut; Pete Domenici (1932-2017), then U.S. Senator from New Mexico; and Paul Begala (born 1961), former political advisor to President Bill Clinton. These five also served as the official roasters of the evening. Featuring three additional unidentified signatures.

 

2. A postal cover commemorating President Nixon's convening of the National Security Council in June 1969 signed by Vice President Spiro Agnew (1918-1996) as "Spiro J. Agnew"; Henry Kissinger (born 1923), then U.S. National Security Advisor, as "Henry A. Kissinger"; Melvin R. Laird (1922-2016), then U.S. Secretary of Defense, as "Melvin R Laird"; and U.S. Army Brigadier General George A. Lincoln (1917-1975) as "G.A. Lincoln". Bearing a cachet of President Richard Nixon and the presidential seal at left, and a cancelled 6 cent U.S. stamp at right. Postmarked from Fisherville, Virginia on June 18, 1969.

 

3. 1p TLS signed by William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925), then U.S. Secretary of State, as "W.J. Bryan" at lower right. The signature is large, measuring 4" x 1.5" alone. On "Department of State / Washington" letterhead. The June 7, 1915 letter concerning a South American diplomatic appointment is accompanied by an original internal transmittal envelope.

 

4. Autograph of Alexander J. Dallas (1759-1817), U.S. Secretary of the Treasury during the Madison administration, as "I am, with great esteem, Your most obed Servt, A.J. Dallas, Secretary." Trimmed from a larger sheet. Minor mounting traces verso, else very good to near fine. 5.125" x 3.125".

 

5. 1p TLS dated March 2, 1943 and signed by Harold Hitz Burton (1888-1964) as "HaroldHBurton / U.S. Senator for Ohio". On "United States Senate / Washington, D.C." letterhead. In part: "There is much for all of us to do in these days to support our system of self-government and the ideals for which it stands." Expected paper folds, else near fine. 6.125" x 8.125".

 

6. 8" x 10" silver gelatin photograph of James A. Farley (1888-1976), U.S. Postmaster General, inscribed and signed by him as "To Everett A. Steffenson Postmaster / With every good wish James A. Farley". Expected minor wear including light rippling to top edge of the photo surface.

 

7. A calling card signed by Allen Granberry Thurman (1813-1895) as "AG Thurman / U.S.S., / Ohio". Creased at right, and mounting traces verso, else very good.

 

International Leaders

 

8. 1p TLS signed by Israeli politician Yitzak Rabin (1922-1995) as "Y. Rabin" only two weeks preceding his ascension as Prime Minister of Israel. On "Minister of Labour" letterhead complete with the Emblem of Israel showing a menorah flanked by two olive branches. The May 13, 1974 letter reads in part: "…thanking you for your generous words of greetings on my recent nomination." Heavily creased into quarters and a few chipped edges, else near fine. 8.5" x 11". Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope stamped in Hebrew. Rabin was assassinated in 1995.

 

9. 1p TLS inscribed and signed by Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-1979), as "Mountbatten of Burma" at center. On "The Viceroy's House, New Delhi" letterhead. The June 16, 1947 letter reads in part: "It is nice to think that you are keeping your brother company on the Roll of Knights." This letter dates from the middle of Mountbatten's 7-month-long term as last viceroy of India; the colonial post was dissolved in August 1947. Mountbatten was assassinated in 1979.

 

10. A detached March 9, 1953 Time Magazine (Vol. LXI, No. 10) front cover signed by Korean statesman Syngman Rhee (1875-1965) as "Syngman Rhee" near bottom. Rhee's portrait by illustrator Boris Chaliapin is captioned "Korea's Syngman Rhee: Deep are the roots of freedom". Expected light folds, trimmed around the borders, else very good to near fine. 7.375" x 9.875". Syngman Rhee served as the first President of South Korea between 1948-1960.

 

11. A calling card autographed by sitting Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi (1944-1991) and dated "24-2-86". Cream stock with gilt embossed "Emblem of India" seal at top. Crisp and pristine. 3.625" x 2.375". Accompanied by the original transmittal letter on "Prime Minister's Office / New Delhi" letterhead signed by the Prime Minister's Social Secretary, Mrs. Rajeshwari Tandon. Rajiv Gandhi, grandson of 1st Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and son of 3rd Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi, served as the 6th Prime Minister of India between 1984-1989. He was assassinated in 1991.

 

12. 1p German language document signed by Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934), then President of Germany's Weimar Republic, as "von Hindenburg" at center. Signed in Berlin, Germany on February 28, 1926. Bearing a blind-embossed German eagle seal at left. Also co-signed by the Minister of War and military Commander-in-chief. The document pertains to the resignation of one Lieutenant-General Strempel. Very good. 8" x 13".

 

American Sports Celebrities

 

13. 8" x 10" glossy color photograph of American professional golfer Jack Nicklaus (born 1940) signed by him as "Jack Nicklaus" at lower right. Scattered tape residue verso, else near fine. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity issued from Puleo Autographs (Hampton, Connecticut) on December 24, 1995.

 

14. Souvenir card signed by gold medal winning swimmer and actor Johnny Weissmuller (1904-1984) as "To Albert / Johnny / Weissmuller". The collector added the typed caption verso: "Johnny Weissmuller signed 2 11 1946." Overall toning, else near fine.
