ALS

Revolutionary War. Ebenezer Elmer (1752-1843). Autograph Letter Signed, "Eben Elmer," 1p, 7" x 9.25", Trenton, New Jersey, June 13, 1783. Docketing at verso. Expected transmittal folds and minor wrinkling. Scattered foxing, toning, and dampstaining. Ink has lightened but remains legible. Two small holes at lower portion not affecting text. In very good condition. An exceptional letter from one Revolutionary War veteran to another.

Elmer, who was a physician in Bridgeton, New Jersey, at the time, recognizes the military service of an unidentified patriot at the close of the Revolutionary War. He writes, in part: "As I have not had the pleasure of seeing you since our emancipation, suffer me to congratulate you upon your happy return to the tranquil path of domestic life after a severe & long conflict in the dangerous & troublesome duties of a Patriot soldier. May the prosperous gales of a beneficent providence waft you along the gilded currant of time & conjugal endearment's consummate the felicity of the minutes as they pass."

Elmer represented New Jersey in the U.S. Congress from 1801 to 1807. He served in the Continental Army as ensign, lieutenant, surgeon's mate, and regimental surgeon, and later practiced medicine in Bridgeton from 1783 to 1789. He was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1789 to 1795, serving as speaker in 1791 and 1795.
