He served as a colonel in the Massachusetts militia before the Revolutionary War and was a justice of the general session court for more than thirty years. His descendants include Winthrop Sargent (1753-1820) patriot, governor, and member of the Federalist Party; John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) famed portrait painter; and Brigadier General Horace B. Sargent (1821-1908) Union general during the Civil War, among many others.
