Archive
An attractive tintype of a young Union soldier together with a Gettysburg reunion ribbon. Sixth Plate, measuring 2.75" x 3.25", N.p., n.d. A studio portrait of a seated young male dressed in his Union uniform and an unusual cap, holding a revolver and an American flag. The gold accents at the uniform's shoulders have all been hand-painted, and the man's cheeks have been rose-tinted. The flag has also been colorized. The tintype is displayed in an ornately carved gold frame decorated with patriotic imagery and housed in a brown embossed case. Accompanying the tintype is a Gettysburg reunion ribbon, measuring 2.25" x 4.5", dated 1889 and celebrating the 62nd PA Volunteers. The front of the tintype case has become detached, and the covers show signs of wear and scratching. Clear, attractive image inside. The ribbon has soiling and staining throughout. Fraying at both ends.

The 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania starting in July 1861 and mustered in on August 31, 1861, as the 33rd Pennsylvania Regiment under the command of Colonel Samuel W. Black. The unit saw action at Yorktown, Seven Days Battles, Gaines's Mill, Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and more. The 62d PA was one of only 14 Union regiments with 17 or more officers who were killed or mortally wounded in battle.
