Description:

Early Boston Shipbuilding, Manuscript Re: Building the Ship "Hawke"

A copy of a letter supplied for arbitration over the building of a ship in Boston. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 12.25", Boston, dated May 29, 1703. Signed by Thomas Palmer and attested to by the clerk Samuel Phipps, Captain Samuel Legg, and John Greenough. With docketing on verso. Flattened folds, with toning, soiling, and foxing. Slightly rough edges. Overall very good.

The document is a copy of a letter written by Thomas Palmer to Jacob Wyman about an agreement made for the ship "Hawke", concerning furnishing timber for the ship's frame and payment for the supplies. Palmer had been working with Thomas Coram and shipyard owners John Parker and John Wakefield. In the letter, Palmer informs Wyman, via his agent, that the timber has been provided and that molds must now be made and carpenters hired. He also outlines the appropriate terms and prices for the work. It appears that Wyman did not fulfil his agreed-upon terms because this letter was presented as evidence in a later suit brought before Captain Samuel Legg and John Greenough.

In part:
"This goes by Mr. Coram to inform you that we have agreed with Mr. Parker & Wakefield about building the vessel Mr. Coram spoke with you about, & you and I agreed to provide the timber for…Therefore he now comes to you to make ye molds and will inform you what terms we are at with ye carpenters wch we desired you comply with, in order for ye building & completing ye ship…We have obliged ourselves to furnish ye builders by you with all Timber suitable for ye same in convenient time, and Mr. Coram will full inform you what sorts will be first wanted…"

Thomas Coram (1688-1751) was an English philanthropist and entrepreneur who came to America to help establish a shipbuilding industry in the colonies. Thomas Palmer was a member of Boston's merchant elite.
