Description:

Leaning Tower of Pisa
Pisa, Italy, ca. 1816
Early 19th C. Italian Engraving of Leaning Tower of Pisa
Engraving
An early-nineteenth-century engraving depicting a remarkable architectural landmark, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, after Italian printmaker Antonio Verico (active 1775-1811). The print is entitled "Veduta del Campanile di Pisa In Toscona" ["A View of the Bell Tower of Pisa in Tuscany."] 1816. [Italy.] Printed "Antonio Verico inc. 1816" just outside the image in the lower right corner. The Italian language text at bottom provides a brief historical background of the medieval structure, naming two builders thought to be involved in its design and construction (one Guglielmo, and one Bonanno Pisano), as well as mentioning its groundbreaking in the 1170s. Verico has dedicated the engraving to "Giovanni Fane Lord Burghersh," or, John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmoreland (1784-1859), also known as Lord Burghersh, who served as British Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Tuscany between 1814-1830. Expected wear including scattered foxing recto and verso. A wrinkled upper left corner, a small closed tear along the left edge, and a minor water stain located along the edge at upper right. Else very good to near fine. 25.5" x 18.375."

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, an 8-story bell tower found on the campus of Pisa Cathedral, has fascinated onlookers since it first began developing its distinctive lean in the late 1170s. Interestingly, the same soft soil that causes its lean - fluctuating in severity between 3-5 degrees over the last 900 years - has also uniquely preserved the tower against structure-toppling earthquakes.
