Early 1724 New Hampshire Land Deed

An early New Hampshire land deed. 1p, measuring 9.25" x 15.25", Hampton, New Hampshire, dated June 22, 1724. The deed is between Benjamin Shaw and Samuel Nudd. Shaw was paid £4 for a piece of land in Hampton containing approximately two acres. Signed and sealed by Benjamin Shaw before Justice of the Peace, Peter Weare. Witnessed by Moses Swett and Abner Sanborn. With flattened folds, and light toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Light edge and corner wear. With bold signatures.

Benjamin Shaw Jr. (1676-1740) was born to Benjamin Shaw and Esther Richardson. He married Mary Field sometime in 1698 and settled in Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States in 1697. Samuel Nudd (1670-1748) pursued a career in agricultural and sea-faring, owning and commanding a small vessel employed in sailing the coast between Hampton and Boston. He married Sarah Maloon in 1701. Colonel Peter Weare (1660 - 1747) was a real estate dealer and a "taverner" in New Hampshire and Maine, keeping the principal inn outside of Portsmouth. He succeeded his father as a Councilor of the Province and was later appointed a Justice of the Superior Court. While he never rose to his father's greatness, he was a man of influence in local public affairs and served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from July 1722 to November 1727 and was a commissioner appointed to settle boundary line disputes.
