Description:

Eisenhower, Dwight D. (1890-1969) Dwight Eisenhower writes to Mamie two days before the Allied landings in North Africa: "the days go so fast I can't even keep track of them!"

Autograph Letter Signed, "Ike," 2 pages, 7" x 8.75", [Gibraltar, November 6, 1942], to his wife Mamie. With the original transmittal envelope franked by Eisenhower, "Free" on the upper right and endorsed at left by "C W. Campbell 2nd Lt. A.D.C.", bearing a Washington, November 12, 1942 postmark. Expected folds, else fine condition.

Writing only two days before the Allied landings in North Africa ("Operation Torch") began, Eisenhower takes time within the deep tunnels under the Rock of Gibraltar to pen a quick note to his wife: "Jack Nygaard just dropped in & asked to be remembered to you and to ask you to say hello to Jonie Haward, Renie Clark and Mrs. Doran. This reminded me that I wanted to get off a note to you - the days go so fast I can't even keep track of them! But you know that I do try & keep you informed, by these hasty scrawls, that I'm still well & going strong. Today I'm desperately trying to get out to Gus' hqrs - but it looks as if a fog has licked me & well there's plenty to do here - but I must get to his his [sic] place soon. I haven't written John for some days - not because I don't want to - but because I'm always on the jump. I hope he understands. This is Friday - I'll try to write you a real letter on Sunday. Loads of love - always - and always remember I do love you, will you?"

Jack Nygaard (1890-1973) served on General Mark Clark's staff in North Africa, and later with the Fifth Army in Italy and Austria.
