Description:

Dwight Eisenhower As NATO's First Supreme Allied Commander Discusses Drawings of His Farm In Gettysburg.

TLS, 7" x 10.25", December 4, 1951, Allied Powers Europe, on "DDE" stationary as NATO's first Supreme Allied Commander. Expected folds, toning, stamped on verso as received December 7, 1951 by John Sloane Architects. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

The TLS reads:

"Dear Mr. Sloan,

The brochures on the Gettysburg Farm are indeed exciting. The whole project appears wonderful. However, my schedule these days leaves little time to contemplate the details of a home that Mrs. Eisenhower and I have always looked forward to occupying  and, therefore, I would not want you and Mr. Stone to plan your trip with the specific purpose of reviewing with us the drawings. But if your proposed trip is to be undertaken under any circumstances, and your itinerary would naturally include this region, I certainly would be most delighted to make your acquaintance and listen to your description of the plan. I can assure the time to allow me this privilege.

So, if you are, in any event, coming this way, may I suggest that when you reach Paris you contact my aide, Lieutenant Colonel Schulz at GALvani-3000, extension 4006 or 4013.

With great appreciation of your many kindnesses and with best wishes for the coming season.

Sincerely,

Dwight D. Eisenhower"

On December 19, 1950, General Dwight Eisenhower was appointed as NATO's first Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), leading to the activation of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Roquencourt near Paris on April 2, 1951. President Harry Truman granted him extensive operational command over U.S. Forces in Europe, encompassing the U.S. Army, Air Forces, and Naval Forces in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Eisenhower's rich wartime experience facilitated the integration of the three American service headquarters in Europe with SHAPE, enhancing resource and personnel coordination.

Despite initial reluctance to be "dual-hatted" as the commander of all U.S. Forces in Europe, Eisenhower accepted the role by mid-May 1952, envisioning a deputy with substantial delegated authority for joint U.S. military affairs. This vision was realized when General Thomas Handy was appointed as his deputy, tasked with establishing a unified command. Following Eisenhower's departure to the United States, General Matthew Ridgway became the next SACEUR on May 30, 1952, and accepted the dual role as the United States Commander in Chief, Europe (USCINCEUR). This marked the establishment of a joint command responsible for all U.S. military operations and activities in the European theater.
