Dwight D. Eisenhower TLS Mentioning "Dickie Mountbatten", Ex-Forbes

1p typed letter signed by 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) as "Dwight D Eisenhower"; accompanied by a black and white press photo of Eisenhower seated in a chair. The letter, on gilt embossed "DDE / Gettysburg / Pennsylvania 17325" letterhead, was written in Indio, California on January 22, 1968. 7.25" x 10.5". The 8" x 10" press photo of Eisenhower is stamped "SC 602205-NFS / General Dwight Eisenhower / Photo by J. Anthony Wills, Houston, Texas / Reproduction by U.S. Army" verso. The letter is boldly signed by Eisenhower in black felt pen. Both pieces show evidence of a few isolated wrinkles, else near fine. Ex-Forbes Collection.

Former President Eisenhower wrote this letter to Irving Asher (1903-1985), a Hollywood film producer who also collected presidential memorabilia. Besides the presidential collection connection, Asher and Eisenhower also shared a mutual friend: Louis "Dickie" Mountbatten, 1st Earl of Mountbatten (1900-1979). Eisenhower wrote to Asher: "In your letter [not included in this lot] you mention that you served under Dickie Mountbatten. He is one of the warm friends that I first met during the war in Britain; one for whom I have the highest admiration and regard." During World War II, Eisenhower and Mountbatten had both served as Supreme Allied Commanders, Eisenhower of the Allied Expeditionary Force in the European Theater, and Mountbatten of South East Asia between 1943-1946.

Eisenhower and the former First Lady had a winter home in the Coachella Valley, where Ike frequently played golf. Fourteen months later, in March 1969, Eisenhower died of congestive heart failure after having suffered five heart attacks between 1955-1968.

Irving Asher worked at Warner Brothers, London Film Productions, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during his film career. He is credited with discovering actor Errol Flynn. Asher also befriended other notables, among them Mountbatten and James Walker, former New York City mayor.

Provenance: Ex-Forbes Collection. Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), the American owner-publisher of Forbes magazine and a consummate collector, amassed one of the most substantial autograph collections of such breadth and depth that it filled a half-dozen residences on three continents. Many of his manuscripts were sold in a series of multi-million dollar sales by Christie's in the early 2000s. The Forbes name is considered to be the apex of provenance, especially when attached to an item like the above. We are honored to have been chosen by the family to sell at auction the substantial balance of the collection.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
