Description:

Duke of Wellington Arthur Wellesley,

Duke of Wellington ALS to Waterloo veteran

1p ALS on cream watermarked paper inscribed overall and signed by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) as "Wellington" at bottom right. In very good to near fine condition. Expected paper folds and some light staining to corners mostly found verso. Page measures 4.5" x 7.25".

The Duke of Wellington wrote "W.C. Shaw" on October 10, 1819 from London. The letter reads in part: "Dear Shaw, I should like to know the result of your negotiation. Lord Wellesley comes to me on Friday; but I shall be home on Thursday & shall be happy to see him any day you will come."

Wellington's correspondent may have been W.C. Shaw, a lieutenant of the Royal Horse Guards Blue. Shaw was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815 according to casualty lists published in The Monthly Magazine or British Register, Vol. 39., part 1 for 1815. The two likely knew each other through the military.

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington dominated military and political affairs in early nineteenth-century Britain. Wellington began his exceptional military career in the late 1780s, rising to hero status after his combined allied forces defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. A masterful military strategist, Wellington participated in 60 battles during his lifetime. He was awarded the Governorship of Plymouth the day before writing this letter, on October 9, 1819; he would serve in this role until 1826. Wellington later served twice as Prime Minister between 1828-1830 and in 1834.
