The Duke of Wellington wrote the "Revd Bishop of Winchester" on April 27, 1837 from London. "Could you come here on Saturday morning at eleven to meet the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of [Leicester / Leinster (?)] the Chancellor of the University of Carlisle …" Wellington closed the letter, "I have the honor to be your Lordship's most obedient and faithful Humble Servant, Wellington."

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington dominated military and political affairs in early nineteenth-century Britain. Wellington began his exceptional military career in the late 1780s, rising to hero status after his combined allied forces defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. A masterful military strategist, Wellington participated in 60 battles during his lifetime. After his return to civic life, Wellington took an active role in government. He served twice as Prime Minister between 1828-1830 and 1834. When he wrote this letter in 1837, Wellington was in between terms as Leader of the House of Lords.

This letter shows how Wellington attempted to coordinate a meeting between officials of the Church of England. Wellington's correspondent Charles Sumner (1790-1874) served as the Bishop of Winchester from 1827-1869. The Bishop of Canterbury was the senior bishop and principal leader of the Anglican Church; William Howley (1766-1848) was the most powerful clergyman of the land from 1828-1848. Less than two months after this meeting, Victoria (1819-1901) had ascended the throne upon the death of her uncle William IV (1765-1837).
