Duke Ellington Signed Contract Dated 15 Months after Carnegie Hall Premiere of Black, Brown, and Beige

1p document signed by celebrated American jazz composer and musician Duke Ellington (1899-1974) as "Duke Ellington" above his printed signature at center right. Signed in New York City on April 13, 1944. On cream onion skin paper with "William Morris Agency / Inc. / Rockefeller Center / 1270 Sixth Avenue / New York" letterhead. Also signed by a theater executive at lower left. Double hole punched at top. A small tear and some staple holes at upper left, else near fine. 8.375" x 11".

Duke Ellington's contract with New York City's Roxy Theater reads in part:

"In connection with my contract, dated March 24, 1944 for my engagement at the Roxy Theatre commencing between July 12 and August 16, 1944, and your option to re-engage me for a period commencing no later than ten (10) months from the termination of the foregoing engagement, it is agreed that the notice of extension of such engagement and re-engagement shall be one (1) week for the first extension week (i.e. third week of engagement) and two weeks for each subsequent extension week."

By the mid-1940s, Duke Ellington had mastered the night club and local theater scene. The late January 1943 debut of Black, Brown, and Beige at Carnegie Hall signaled Ellington's entre into lengthier jazz compositions, based more on the foundations of classical music.
