Duke Ellington’s Signed Contract b/t Music Publishing Company & Johnny Hodges to Publish “Dual Highway”



Partly Printed Document Signed “Duke Ellington,” four pages, 8.5” x 10.75”, front & verso on two conjoined sheets. New York, April 1, 1958. Fine condition.



Tempo Music agrees to publish “Dual Highway,” written by Hodges. In 1941, Duke Ellington had formed Tempo Music to publish his and other writers’ compositions. Hodges is to receive 100% of the “sums herein payable to the Writer…” Only signed by Ellington at the conclusion.



Johnny Hodges (1907-1970) joined Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in 1928. He left Ellington to form his own band in 1951, but returned in 1955, playing alto sax until he died in 1970. Allmusic.com describes Hodges as the “possessor of the most beautiful tone ever heard in jazz.”
