Description:

Heyward thanks a book reviewer who compliments his portrayal of the soul of "the primitive negro, uneducated, and unspoiled by contamination" in "Porgy" _ "an everlasting delightful book..."

Typed Letter Signed "DuBose Heyward," 1p, 8.5" x 11". Charleston, S.C., March 5, 1926. To writer David Warren Ryder, The San Francisco Review. Light toning at edges. Fine condition.

On February 14, 1926, Ryder wrote Heyward, in part, "The primitive negro, uneducated, and unspoiled by contamination, has always been a subject of fascinating interest to me; and your portrayal of his soul in _Porgy' is in its excellence beyond anything I have ever read. I shall take pleasure in reviewing the book for our little group of readers ... You may be sure that I shall spread the glory of _Porgy' about amongst my friends and acquaintances. It is, I repeat, an everlasting delightful book..." Ryder also asks Heyward "what other books you have written. In some way I have got the notion that you are the author of a book of poems..." Ryder's retained carbon is present.

Heyward's reply, in full, "Please let me thank you for the friendly impulse that prompted you to write your recent letter about _Porgy'. I am more than pleased that you like the book and will appreciate any word that you may say for it in your paper. I have previously published two volumes of poetry: _Carolina Chansons', in collaboration with Hervey Allen, and _Skylines and Horizons', both through the Macmillan Company. If you will write to Miss Hutchinson, publicity Department of The Macmillan Company, and ask for the books for review in your magazine, I am sure that she will be glad to send you copies. With kindest regards, and assuring you again of my appreciation of your interest..."

"Porgy" was adapted by Heyward's wife Dorothy into a 1927 play which inspired the 1935 opera "Porgy and Bess" with music by George Gershwin.
