Dr. John L. Dunlap Election of 1864 Broadside
Broadside
A broadside for Dr. John Dunlap's comments on the Mexican War and the U.S. Army, Watertown, dated October 7, 1863. Entitled "Dr. John L. Dunlap's Remarks on the American Army after the War in Mexico." The broadside also prints a correspondence between the Army of the Potomac and Dr. Dunlap in which he is invited to run for president. At bottom is a small advertisement for Dunlap's patent medicines, comparing his accomplishments to Christopher Columbus, Cleopatra, and Napoleon Bonaparte. With flattened folds and a small hole at the centerfold. Scattered moderate foxing throughout. Very good. No other examples traced in OCLC or elsewhere. Measuring 10.75" x 16.25"

In part:
"Fellow Citizens - It is with pleasure that I have to state to you, that we are at peace with all the nations of the earth. Our relations with our sister republic of Mexico, for some years past have been of the most unpleasant character, and in order to support our honor and character as a nation, after the Mexican army crossed the Rio Grande in to Texas, Congress declared the country in a state of war, and our brave and gallant army went forth to the mighty conflict…A braver army never went forth into the field of battle., they won for themselves and their country imperishable laurels that will never fade, but will ever shine brighter and brighter on the pinnacle of fame. Never shall we forget the noble and gallant conduct of the brave General Taylor, at the battle of Buena Vista, during the hottest of the fight when he rode up to Captain Bragg, of the artillery, and told him to give the Mexicans 'a little more grape.'…"

J.T. Reynolds, Liet., 35th Regt. N.Y.V. to Dr. Dunlap:
"There is much talk in the Army of the Potomac of running the Hon. J. L. Dunlap, the second Henry Clay, and great war horse of the North, for the Presidency in 1864. Will you consent to be a candidate, if your numerous friends shall see fit to call you to the Chair which you, above all living statesmen, are so eminently qualified to fill? Neither the ever changing scenes of life upon the tented field, nor the terrible roar of cannon, amid the fierce strife of battle, can efface from the minds of American patriots, the name and virtues of one of the noblest songs of this great Republic…"

John Lindsay Dunlap (1798-1875) was an eccentric patent medicine salesman who ran for president in 1864. He seemingly declared Ulysses S. Grant as his running mate, although we can find no evidence that Grant was even aware of such a nomination, let alone that he accepted it.
