Description:

Douglas MacArthur Signed Pacific Liberation Stamp, PSA Certified Authentic

A stock card bearing two stamps relating to American military commander Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964), including a 2 1/2s "Republik Maluku Selatan / Fifth Anniversary Pacific Liberation" stamp, ca. 1951, boldly signed as "Douglas MacArthur" across the bottom and edges of the stamp affixed to the card recto. The second stamp, a U.S. 6-cent "Douglas MacArthur" stamp first issued to commemorate MacArthur's 91's birthday on January 26, 1971, is neatly affixed at the center of the card verso. The card is encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified authentic. An isolated scuff in the upper left corner recto, else near fine. The card measures 3.5" x 2.5" while the slab measures 5.25" x 3.125."

The "Republik Maluku Selatan" stamp commemorates the establishment of an Allied base of operations on the Maluku Islands (also known as the Moluccas, or historically, the Spice Islands, today administrated by Indonesia) during the last years of World War II. Allied forces had chosen the Maluku Islands as an ideal staging ground for future military maneuvers, namely efforts to regain the Philippines. (MacArthur had been forced to evacuate the Philippines in advance of encroaching Japanese forces in March 1942. The foiled commander had promised revenge, vowing, "I came through and I shall return.") Australian and American forces engaged Japanese forces during the Battle of Morotai--located at one corner of the Maluku Islands--through September 1944 to August 1945. MacArthur did return to the Philippines as promised, wresting Leyte from Japanese forces in October 1944.

MacArthur's 50-year-long military career spanned the first half of the twentieth century and three major international conflicts. After graduating at the top of his class at West Point in 1903, MacArthur served in Mexico and the Western Front during World War I. The highly decorated officer resigned during the interwar period, but was recalled to active duty during World War II, where he became commander of the United States Army in the Far East. MacArthur's tenacity in reconquering the Philippines from the Japanese secured the public's devotion.
