Description:

Dorothea Dix 2x Signed ALS Mentioning "Genl Dix"

A 2pp autograph letter signed by Dorothea Dix (1802-1887), the American nurse, social reformer, and philanthropist, as "D L. Dix" at the center of the second page. Written while at the New York City address of Major General John A. Dix (1795-1879) at 3 West 21st Street, on August 1, [n.y.]. Technically the letter is partially signed a second time by Dorothea Dix when she writes "Genl Dix" within the body of the letter. The second and outer pages of the cream bifold stationery paper are blank. Expected light wear including transmittal folds and scattered ink impressions, else near fine. 5" x 8." Accompanied by a Civil War-dated "Sanitary Commission, / Washington, D.C." stamped and postmarked envelope addressed to "C.R. Agnew M.D." Expected weathering.

Dorothea Dix wrote an unknown correspondent, in full:

"August 1st
3 - West 21st St.
A.M. 8

Dear Sir, I am in the city for a few hours, - must see you. Can you call at Genl Dix - or shall I come to yr office. I cannot go out till past ten this A.M. detained by an uncertain [illegible] arrangement.

But I must if possible see you whenever you can give the time before 4 this P.M.

Respectfully,

D L. Dix."

Dorothea Dix was staying at the home of Major General John A. Dix while visiting New York City. The familial connection between Dorothea and John is unclear, though the two were not, as has erroneously been stated elsewhere, sister and brother. Since they shared the same surname, they were more than likely cousins. John A. Dix served as the highest ranking Major General of Union Army Volunteers during the Civil War, while Dorothea Dix served as Superintendent of Army Nurses of the Union Army from 1861-1865.

The "Sanitary Commission" envelope is addressed to Cornelius Rae Agnew (1830-1888), a New York ophthalmologist who served as Surgeon-General of the State of New York and medical director of the New York State Hospital for Volunteers. Agnew was also one of five regular Standing Committee members of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, tasked with providing medical treatment for wounded Union troops.
