Dizzy Dean (1910-1974) aka Jerome Herman Dean served as a pitcher for several Midwestern professional baseball teams, including the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and St. Louis Browns, throughout the mid 1930s. In the celebrated 1934 season, Dizzy pitched thirty winning games, leading his team to a World Series victory over the Detroit Tigers. Dizzy, along with fellow teammates Daffy, Dazzy, and Ducky, were members of the colorful and folksy "Gashouse Gang", as the St. Louis Cardinals were then called. The team captured the public's imagination during the Great Depression and provided escape from the country's economic woes.
