Description:

Division of Slaves Among Confederate Soldier's Siblings in Alabama

Three court-appointed commissioners, E. F. Montague, J. T. Eldred, and J. M. Nicholson, divided the eight slaves in the estate of Isaac N. Roberts into seven shares to distribute among his heirs. Each share was valued at $728.57, so those who drew slaves valued more had to pay those who drew slaves valued at less than that amount.

Because Roberts was only 24 and unmarried when he died of disease in the Confederate army, his heirs were his two surviving brothers and five surviving sisters.

[SLAVERY.] Manuscript Document Signed, Report of Commissioners to Probate Court, November 28, 1862, Macon County, Alabama. 1 p., 7.5" x 12". Expected folds; some small holes on folds, not affecting text; very good.
