Autograph Letter Signed "Benedct. Arnold," 1 page, 7.5" x 5", [New Haven, Connecticut, early 1760s]. Inlaid. To Silas Marsh. On laid paper.



In full, "Please to Pay the Above Sum of Ten Pounds & Nine pence Lawfull Money to Doctr Samuel Cooke & his Receit [sic] shall be a full Discharge from me From the Note & all Accounts, & you'll Oblige."


Silas Marsh (1740 - 1790) of Lebanon, Connecticut, Yale Class of 1764, became a lawyer. He later moved from Sharon, Connecticut, five miles west to Amenia, New York. In the Revolutionary War, he was known as an active patriot. Dr. Samuel Cooke (1738 - 1783) of New Haven later moved to Poughkeepsie, New York, and was a surgeon in the Revolutionary War.


In 1761, Benedict Arnold (1741 - 1801) moved from Norwich, Connecticut, to New Haven and set up a store near Yale College that sold books, drugs, and jewelry.
