Archive of Diplomatic Correspondence of the British Consulate Tangier, principally letters and dispatches received by James Mario Matra and his successor in 1806, James Green, a few received at a later period by E.W. Drummond Hay, including autograph letters and letters signed by Admiral Lord St. Vincent (47, as Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean, 1797-1799, sending naval and political intelligence relating to the French, inveighing against the “Tyrants in the Directory,” discussing other arrangements, some concerning the blockading of Cadiz and defense of Gibraltar and Tangier, and making reference to the mutiny, the Battle of the Nile, and “the annihilation of Buonaparte and his army” in Egypt); Admiral Lord Collingwood (16, 1806-1808, concerning naval matters, including Spanish Infringements of the rights of neutrality of the Barbary Coast); Admiral Sir John Orde (12, 1798, off Cadiz); Sir Evan Nepean (2, 1791, also with a catalog description of presents – ornamented pistols, watches, etc. – sent for the Emperor of Morocco); the Duke of Portland (4, 1796-1801, including “Secret and Confidential” instructions); Lord Sir William Parker (2, 1798); Sir H.W. Dalrymple, Commander of Gibraltar (3, 1807-1808); Lord Palmerston (4, 1837-1839, one a circular announcing the death of William IV and accession of Victoria, another discussing treaty negotiations with Morocco and the rights of the British Government to appoint Jews as consular agents there), and many others, including a quantity of letters of intelligence and copy letters, some relating to the Peninsular War, one about the surrender of Junot, another concerning prizes captured by the American ship “Philadelphia”, c. 300 items, several hundred pages, folio and 4to, minor wear but generally sound, 1789-1843 (the majority before 1808).  Many letters unsigned or contemporary copies.

We do our own in-house worldwide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers.
