Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was a prominent Mexican painter who's large frescoes helped establish the mural movement in both Mexican and international art. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera would paint murals in Mexico City, Chapingo, and Cuernavaca, as well as in United States cities such as San Francisco, Detroit, and New York, among other places. His frescoes, which depicted a style influenced by the Aztecs consisting of simplified figures and bold colors, dealt mainly with Mexican society and reflected the country's 1910 Revolution. It was during this time that Rivera met and married fellow artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), a relationship that, while passionate, became notably tumultuous as time went on.
