DeWitt Clinton ALS Together with Thomas Cushing Signed Legal Document

A pair of signed papers, including an autograph letter and a legal document, relating to two prominent American politicians, DeWitt Clinton and Thomas Cushing. Includes:

1. Thomas Cushing Signed Guardianship Document. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 12.25", Massachusetts Bay, dated March 12, 1779. Signed "T. Cushing." The document records Sarah Jackson, a minor aged above 14, appointing Thomas Greenough of Boston to be her guardian, with full Power and Authority. Cushing has written an endorsement at the bottom of the document and signed it, reading: "The above named minor personally appeared before me & acknowledged this Instruments or Letters of Guardianship to be her free Rits & Deed which I allow & approve of. Boston, March 12th 1779." With flattened folds and edge chipping. Moderate toning and foxing throughout. Boldly signed.

Thomas Cushing (1725-1788) was a Boston lawyer, merchant, statesman, and Founding Father, active in local politics from 1761-1774. He represented Massachusetts in the First and Second Continental Congresses but was ultimately voted out after standing in opposition to American independence.

2. DeWitt Clinton Autograph Letter Signed. 1p, measuring 7.25" x 8.75", New York, dated July 10, 1794. Signed "DeWitt Clinton" and addressed to A.I. Darllen Esq. The letter is written on behalf of the Governor of New York, acknowledging the receipt of a letter and "a copy of the 2d vol. of the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania transmitted with it." Signed by Clinton as Secretary of the Governor of New York. The letter has been mounted to a larger page, measuring 8.25" x 10.75" overall. The page is slightly curled, with soiling to the mounting page. The upper margin has soiling and foxing. Large and bold signature by Clinton.

DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) was the nephew of Founding Father George Clinton and served as a U.S. senator, mayor of New York, and 6th governor of New York. During the 1812 presidential election, Clinton posed as a worthy competitor against incumbent James Madison. Although he was unsuccessful, he carried most of the Northeastern votes and proved to be significantly more successful than previous Federalist candidates.
