Description:

DeWitt Clinton
[New York], December 11, 1809
DeWitt Clinton Address, Seeks Subscriptions for Pioneering Public Schools
Pamphlet/Booklet

A string-bound pamphlet, 20pp. 5" x 8.5". published by Collins & Perkins, New York, 1810. Disbound, exhibiting expected chipping at margins, toning and other wear consistent with age. Front page is detached; ownership signature on back cover. In this imprint, Clinton seeks support for the development of public education, free to all.

At the time of this speech, childhood education in New York was relegated to the realm of church-run charity schools for the public, or private schools for children of parents with means. Clinton founded "The Free Society of New-York" to establish, fund and erect public schools open to all children free of charge. The New York legislature incorporated the group but did not provide funding, so the Society depended on subscriptions by individual members.

Due to Clinton and the Society's fundraising and other efforts, by 1814 there were 800 students in public schools in the City.

DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) was a prominent American politician and influential leader in the early 19th century. He served as both Mayor of New York City and Governor of New York, playing a key role in shaping the city's and the state's future. Clinton is widely celebrated for his vision and determination in developing the Erie Canal, a monumental infrastructure project that revolutionized trade and transportation in the region, fueling New York's economic growth and establishing it as a major commercial hub.

Clinton's career reflected a deep commitment to civic planning and urban development, as he championed projects aimed at improving infrastructure and public welfare. His involvement in municipal initiatives, like the improvement of city lots and other public works, illustrated his dedication to fostering New York City's growth and modernization. Clinton's legacy endures as a symbol of ambition and progress in American public works, marking him as one of the most influential figures in New York's development.
