Delightful Children's Chapbooks from the Nineteenth Century

[CHILDREN’S CHAPBOOKS.] 18 Children’s Chapbooks, ca. 1837-1883. Approximately 304 pp. total. Published inexpensively, most in very good condition; some cover wear; one reinforced with staples.

This collection of miniature chapbooks features eighteen children’s books issued by a variety of American publishers in Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine. Most do not list an author. They include religious tracts, toybooks, primers, alphabets, and hymn books. All are illustrated with various woodcuts, and most are part of larger series issued by the various publishers.

Chapbooks emerged in the sixteenth century as a type of street literature in Europe and rose to their height of popularity in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Their name derives from the nineteenth-century term chapmen, the itinerant salesmen who sold such books. In nineteenth-century America, publishers used these small, inexpensive books to appeal to children and their parents with moral tales, illustrated with woodcuts, that could be read aloud.
