Declaration Signer Thomas Nelson Magnificent DS with Superb Signature

THOMAS NELSON, Partially Printed Document Signed, Bond to Alexander Macauley, August 6, 1788. 2 pp., 7.375" x 9.125". Expected folds; some fold reinforcements on verso; seal intact; excellent dark signature.

Former Virginia Governor Thomas Nelson signed this bond to secure his debt to Yorktown merchant Alexander Macaulay (1754-1798). Acknowledging a debt to Macaulay of £352.10s.3¼p., Nelson signed the bond for double the amount of the debt, or £705.0s.6½d. As long as Nelson paid the original debt “in specie on demand,” the bond would be void, but if he did not, Macaulay could sue for the amount of the bond. On January 20, 1789, two weeks after Nelson’s death, Macaulay transferred the bond to Williamsburg merchant Samuel Beall (1748-1793) “for value received.” This later transaction made Beall a creditor of Nelson’s estate.
