Description:

Paine Robert 1731 - 1814 Declaration signer Robert Treat Paine signed note for promise of payment
Signed note on laid paper, 6.5" x 2.25". Penned entirely in the hand of Robert Treat Paine, as a note to secure a debt. Signed and dated, "September 10 th 1785." Scripted by Paine in part:

"I promise to pay to Robert A Treat Paine on Order Twenty Dollars and Interest till paid". In addition, note was co-signed by the debtor Joseph Noyes, and by William Badger perhaps as a witness. Expected folds, with light toning, else near fine with strong ink contrast. A fantastic example for the collector of Declaration of Independence Signers.

By the end of December 1776 Robert Treat Paine was speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1777, a member of the Executive council in 1779, a member of the committee that drafted the state constitution in 1780. He was Massachusetts Attorney General from 1777 to 1790 and prosecuted the treason trials following Shay's Rebellion. In 1780, He was a charter member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He later served as a justice of the state supreme court from 1790 to 1804 when he retired. When he died at the age of 83 in 1814, he was buried in Boston's Granary Burying Ground.
